The Ins and Outs of an Australian Christmas

So we’re at that funny time of year between Christmas and New Years where everything’s all a little up in the air and a bit undecided. None of us really know if the banks are open, no one envies those who work in retail and we’re all racking our brains for an original resolution that we may actually stick to. As for me? Well I feel it’s time to give you all a little update on what I’ve been up to recently, and what my next plans are!

It probably won’t surprise you to know that I am still here in Coffs Harbour, but due to leave imminently having had some of the best adventures so far. In the weeks leading up to Christmas my time was spent with the awesome people here at Aussitel Backpackers doing things such as visiting Dorrigo National Park…

Storm hunting…(admittedly this one was a little unintentional, as I’d supposedly gone to watch the sunset!)

Swimming in waterfalls…

And jumping off the jetty…

I have to say it’s definitely been one of the best build ups to Christmas I’ve ever had, though the sunshine and heat ensured I definitely didn’t feel Christmassy! It was the same with Christmas Day, but that didn’t stop the day being as awesome as I’d hoped it would be. I had toyed with the idea of returning to Sydney for Christmas but decided against it as I wanted to prioritise spending the special day with my friends. I get on so well with everyone here at Aussitel that it was like spending Christmas Day with a second family – and I’m a big believer that Christmas is a time for family!

As Australian Christmases go I’d say ours was very successful – we had a pool party at the hostel in the morning…

Followed by an afternoon at the beach…

And then the most amazing Christmas dinner cooked by Kyle and Laura – two fellow guests at Aussitel who just happen to be chefs – followed by Secret Santa!

So even though it didn’t feel like Christmas it was still an amazing day! 🙂

I must say, I could easily get used to this whole ‘not working’ malarkey, as I’ve definitely had some of my best days so far whilst being a lady of leisure. However, funds do not allow for that and so I have some very exciting news for you all – I HAVE A JOB!

I’m so, so happy to say that as of February I will be an au pair to a lovely family in Sydney. I’m really hoping that this experience will give me an insight into what life is like living in Australia. One of the things I don’t want to do is get sucked into doing just the stereotypical backpacker/tourist things during my time here. That’s not to say I won’t be doing them, I just want to do other things that will make my experience a bit more authentic.

So what am I going to do in the meantime I hear you ask? Well! Tomorrow, Tuesday 30th December, I will be leaving Coffs Harbour! *sobs* I love it here, but I have now been at this hostel for six weeks, so it’s probably time to move on! 😉 And so it’s back down to Sydney I go, to see 2015 in in style by watching the fireworks!

And as for the whole of January? Well…not a clue! Today is going to be a bit of a life admin day, and I’m going to spend it looking for a January plan! I’m edging towards doing some farm work, potentially out of the state of New South Wales as so far I haven’t left this state yet, and it would be nice to spread my wings a bit! I want to start doing some regional work as in order to obtain a second year working visa I must complete 88 days of regional work, and as much as I have all the way up until 27th October 2015 to complete that I definitely do not want to be panicking and cramming it in right at the very end!

So if I find anything I’ll let you all know! 🙂

Have a great New Years everyone, speak to you all in 2015! xxx
